The problem
“How do I sell places in my workshops without a ticketing site taking a cut of every seat?”
Zambelis Concrete Artistry shapes architectural concrete by hand in Ballarat. They arrived with a folder of gallery grade photography, a sharp sense of how the site should feel, and a quote for a template they did not want.
Workshops are a real part of the business. Every new date, price change and cancellation was going to mean either a ticketing platform clipping each seat, or a phone call to a developer. Neither works when you are the one running the workshop.
What I built
I built the site from scratch around their photography. Full bleed images, quiet typography, and a layout that gets out of the way of the concrete.
Workshops run through an admin area they log into. They schedule a session, watch bookings come in, change or cancel one, and resend somebody their confirmation email when it goes missing. The booking terms are theirs to edit too.
Enquiries land in the same place. They deal with one and archive it, rather than losing it somewhere in an inbox.
For sessions that are not scheduled yet, people can put their name on an interest list. The next date then goes out to a group who already asked for it.
Where it landed
They schedule their own workshops, take the money without a middleman, and have not needed me to change a date.
Questions this one answers
Can I sell tickets to workshops or events without Eventbrite?
Yes. Zambelis sells every workshop place through their own site. No per ticket fee to a platform, and the customer never leaves the site to pay.
Can I change my own dates and prices?
That is the whole point of it. They schedule sessions, edit them and cancel them without contacting me. If you have to ring a developer to move a date, the site is not finished.
What happens when a customer loses their confirmation email?
They resend it themselves in a couple of clicks. Small thing, but it comes up more often than you would think.
I already have good photos. Will a custom site actually use them properly?
A template resizes your photography to fit its layout. A custom build does the opposite and puts the layout around your photos. That was the main reason Zambelis walked away from the template quote.
